Talent Is the Product—But Culture Is the Power Source

I once spent weeks researching the perfect toaster. I read every review, compared features, watched unboxings, and analyzed specs like a maniac. Eventually, I picked a sleek, top-rated model with more features than I’d ever need. I even scored a discount for picking it up in-store.

When I brought it home, I was thrilled. I unwrapped it like a kid on their birthday and proudly placed it on the kitchen counter.

It looked amazing.

Then the family walked in.

They hated it.

It was too big. Too hot. Too complicated. It didn’t fit our needs—or our vibe. I had nailed the “product” but failed to consider the most important thing: our culture.

Sound familiar?

I’ve seen this same thing happen over and over again in sales teams. A company hires someone with the right skills, the right background, and the right “look.” On paper, it’s a slam dunk. In reality? It’s a ticking time bomb.

Skills are easy to assess. Behavior takes more effort. But culture? That’s where most companies drop the ball.

If you’re leading a team, especially in sales, you need to stop relying on gut feeling and start getting clear about your culture. Not your mission statement. Not your perks. Your real culture—the behaviors, energy, and unspoken norms that drive your best people to perform.

At Forte Search Partners, we’ve run thousands of human experiments as internal leaders. We don’t just screen for skills—we evaluate for alignment across what we call the ABCs:

  • A – Abilities (hard skills)
  • B – Behaviors (soft skills)
  • C – Culture (fit and fuel)

Most companies handle A and B. But C? That’s where we come in. Because when you get culture wrong, the cost is silent—but brutal. Morale dips. Turnover spikes. Results stall.

Here’s the lesson: The wrong fit burns more than toast. Get culture right—or get ready to explain the smoke.
